The Surface Laptop Ultra marks the debut platform for Nvidia’s RTX Spark technology. Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PC initiative from 2024, according to Brett Ostrum, corporate vice president of Surface at Microsoft, was aimed at the MacBook Air.

Ostrum stated that Microsoft could not achieve the compute level of the MacBook Pro using existing chips. Consequently, Nvidia presented itself as a logical choice for Microsoft to compete against the MacBook Pro.

The Surface Laptop Ultra features a CNC-machined aluminium body, a large trackpad, chicklet keys, and integrated fan vents. A Surface Laptop Ultra model equipped with 24GB of RAM begins at a price point of $2,599.99.

The premium Surface Laptop Ultra, featuring 128GB of memory, costs $5,899.99. The RTX Spark chips incorporated into the Surface Laptop Ultra are specifically designed for creative tasks and local AI workloads.

Microsoft confirmed that the Surface Laptop Ultra possesses the capability to manage compressed 280 billion-parameter AI models running locally. The RTX Spark functions as both a Central Processing Unit and a Graphics Processing Unit.

Developers requiring a potent GPU for local AI computation find the Surface Laptop Ultra suitable. Furthermore, the device targets professionals and creatives who might otherwise purchase a MacBook Pro.

Jit Hirani, lead designer for Surface devices, announced that the magnetic Surface Connect charging port represents the world’s first built-in magnetic connect for USB-C. Microsoft implemented a magnetic attachment around the USB-C port, avoiding a custom port solution.

Ostrum noted that Microsoft spent years 'grinding on' the magnetic USB-C charging solution. Microsoft employs an Automated Experience Lab (AXL) tool to gauge device responsiveness.

This AXL tool measures performance across tasks such as typing speed and launching Microsoft Teams. Microsoft even created a robot, nicknamed BB8, to assist in testing the RTX Spark platform.

Ostrum confirmed that Nvidia engineers can now upload code remotely to the BB8 robot to speed up testing.
