Disney has renewed the supernatural young adult series Coven Academy for a second season. The first season consists of 21 short chapters.
Nine of these chapters premiered on Freeform on 1 October, while the remaining episodes debuted on Disney+ and Hulu on 2 October. The production was originally planned as the first young adult series to air on the Disney Channel.
Disney reported that the first season reached 20.3 million hours watched globally within its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. Social media engagement was high, with the first chapter generating more than 30 million views across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
Nielsen data showed Coven Academy was the most-watched streaming series for viewers aged 12-17 through its premiere weekend. The show also ranked in the top five among all viewers when measured by views, according to Nielsen.
Nielsen noted that half of the viewers aged 12-17 watched the show with an adult, while nearly two-thirds of viewers aged 6-11 did the same. Federle executive produces the series alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row, and Bronwyn North-Reist.
Chorus Boy Productions, owned by Federle, produces the show in association with Disney Kids & Family. Federle said, "I don’t want to tell another straight-up mom mystery again, but I think there is something fun to explore in what makes a mother and daughter so dangerous when they’re together. And who would be most threatened by that?"
