Apple is developing prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2, which features an under-display Face ID system. The company reportedly intends to release the second-generation iPhone Duo in 2027.

The original iPhone Duo, which launched on 23 October 2026, includes a Touch ID fingerprint sensor integrated into its side button. John Ternus assumed the role of CEO in September 2026.

Estimated delivery dates for the Duo shifted to late January 2027. Simon Krishnan purchased a Duo with 512GB of memory for A$3,899.

Krishnan described the device as a luxury item but noted that life is too short to pass up such a purchase. John Gruber stated, "It's been a lot of fun trying the Duo out for a week, but it feels like I've gotten to use an extraordinarily polished prototype — not a finished product that I'd want to buy and carry."

Marques Brownlee suggested the phone is suitable for those who can afford the $2,000 price tag and enjoy the idea, despite the learning curve of lacking facial identification. Francisco Jeronimo of IDC expects Apple to capture 44% of the foldable value and 31% of units in 2026.

Jeronimo also forecasts that Apple will become the market leader in the foldable category by 2027. Apple limited pre-orders to two handsets per customer for online orders in China, France, Hong Kong, India and Japan.

The company told Reuters that walk-in availability would vary by country, with limited stocks in the US, Australia, Canada, Mexico and much of Britain and Europe.
