Pakistan observed World Iodine Deficiency Day on 21 October to highlight the critical role of iodine in human health. The observance aimed to encourage measures for treating and preventing disorders caused by a lack of this micronutrient.

Iodine serves as an essential micronutrient that the thyroid gland requires to manufacture hormones. This mineral regulates muscle activity, metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate.

Dr Saeed Noman stated that a deficiency in iodine can result in thyroid conditions, such as goitre. Noman further warned that inadequate iodine levels can impair brain development and physical growth.

Pregnant women and young children are identified by Noman as being especially susceptible to the dangers of low iodine intake. Dr Huma Saleem noted that using salt that is adequately iodized provides a simple, affordable, and effective method to stop deficiency.

Saleem advised the public to maintain a balanced diet and consume recommended amounts of iodized salt to ensure sufficient intake.
