Data centres have expanded into vast "hyperscale" facilities, covering millions of square feet and housing the physical infrastructure necessary for artificial intelligence operations. Ric Galvan expects the number of data centres within his district, which spans roughly 55 square miles, to increase to approximately 20 over the coming years.
Microsoft intends to mitigate the impact of its data centres on local communities and the environment using a concept it terms “biomimicry.” This biomimicry approach involves blending the data centres into the natural surroundings to cultivate resilient ecosystems that support biodiversity, strengthen community bonds, and help the facilities become better neighbours.
The company plans to apply “nature-inspired solutions to restore and enhance natural ecosystems” at over 20 locations across the United States and Germany. In 2023, Microsoft funded a project amounting to $4.2 million to restore the natural flow of a creek situated on its property.
Previously, in 2022, Microsoft cleared more than 2,600 trees across a 33-acre area while constructing a data centre in San Antonio. The corporation introduced a five-point strategy named “Community-First AI Infrastructure” in January.
Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott imposed statewide halts on data centre projects seeking grid connections until audits of their water and electricity consumption are completed. Last year alone, data centres within Texas consumed an estimated 25 billion gallons of water.
