Australia bans under-16s social media use citing credible child harm risks

The Australian government implemented a ban on social media use for individuals under the age of sixteen, asserting that credible risks support this measure. The government stated that significant credible risks of harm to children justify such a precautionary measure even before a full scientific consensus is reached.
In December alone, the platform removed almost five million accounts from under-16s users. Reddit has challenged the ban in a high court, questioning the government's action.
During the legal challenge, Reddit noted that no scientific consensus exists regarding a direct link between social media use and specific harms. Meanwhile, the eSafety commissioner's powers received an upgrade, and associated fines were doubled to nearly $100 million.
