Ugandan health officials are investigating whether Ebola patients from Nigeria and Kenya crossed paths at Entebbe airport on 3 October. Dr Wessam Mankoula suggested that the patients might have been exposed through other contact or shared equipment.
Nigeria currently reports one Ebola case involving a 42-year-old Ugandan-born woman residing in Abuja. The woman, who is married to a Swiss diplomat stationed in Nigeria, is showing signs of improvement.
Her husband is currently in isolation and remains asymptomatic. After spending approximately 2.5 weeks in Uganda, the Nigerian patient returned to her country on 3 October following a two-hour stopover in Addis Ababa.
She tested positive for the virus on 20 October. Nigeria's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention is conducting genomic sequencing to track the virus.
The Africa CDC found more people exposed to the Nigerian woman than the 44 people first identified. Kenya has confirmed nine infections and one death related to the current outbreak.
A Kenyan man who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda to Nairobi died, marking the first recorded death in Kenya for this outbreak. Dr Patrick Amoth confirmed that all nine Kenyan infections are linked to the first patient and warned, "We are not out of the woods."
The first group of people quarantined in Kenya is scheduled to return home this Sunday. Dr Mohamed Janabi emphasised that regional vigilance is required.
