Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that Basant will be celebrated from 12 to 14 March 2027. The Lahore district administration has authorized kite flying during this period, excluding specific prohibited zones.

The Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Bill, 2025 was passed by the provincial assembly on 24 December 2025 to govern the festival. Manufacturers and traders must obtain digital registration through the government’s eBiz application to operate legally.

Production of permissible kite-flying materials is allowed starting 5 September 2026, while the sale of these items to the general public begins 10 February 2027. Kites must not exceed 35 inches in length and 4.5 githas in width, while large 'Gudda' kites are limited to 34 inches in length and 40 inches in width.

Strings must be made of cotton with counts between 28 and 9 taars, coated with maanjha containing a minimum 350 mesh glass powder. Authorities strictly restrict the use of chemicals, adhesives, metallic substances, or abrasive materials in the preparation of strings.

Prohibited areas for the festival include the aircraft take-off path, Al-Faisal Town, Jorraypul, Tajpura, and Canal Bank Road adjacent to Tajoura. Motorcycles in Lahore are required to be equipped with safety rods to comply with the new safety measures.

Registered entities are required to display their certificates conspicuously and maintain complete records of stock and sales for inspection. The festival was previously banned in 2007 following injuries and deaths caused by sharp strings and celebratory gunfire.
