Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah invited a Chinese company to construct a water pipeline in Karachi. The proposed infrastructure project spans more than 100 kilometres in length.
A representative from the Chinese firm confirmed their readiness to undertake the pipeline construction. During a visit to the HBSZ facility in Wuhan, China, Shah reviewed the manufacturing of new gates for the Sukkur Barrage.
The Chief Minister also inspected preparations for 100 canal gates while accompanied by Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro. Each gate for the Sukkur Barrage weighs more than 50 tonnes.
The Sukkur Barrage improvement project has entered its fourth consecutive year of operation. Workers have replaced and activated 44 of the 54 river gates as part of the restoration effort.
Authorities launched this rehabilitation and modernisation project on 24 February 2023, with a target completion date of 30 June 2027. The China Road and Bridge Corporation and HBSZ were jointly awarded the contract for these works.
Funding for the project comes from the World Bank, the federal government, and the Sindh government.
