Improving air quality in Karachi could add an estimated 2.7 years to the average resident's life. The city's air quality met the World Health Organisation's daily guidelines on only three days during 2024, according to the PAQI's 2025 national report.

Open waste burning contributes 7% of the city's PM2.5 emissions, as noted in the PAQI's 2025 source inventory. Karachi generates more than 14,800 tonnes of waste every day, with District Central alone producing over 3,000 tonnes daily, an official of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) stated.

Organic matter makes up around 42% of the city's waste, while Karachi accounts for 25% of the recyclable plastic waste in Pakistan. The World Bank downgraded the $100 million Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project for Karachi to "Moderately Unsatisfactory" in July 2026.

Informal recyclers recover 4,100 tonnes of waste daily, creating an economy valued at Rs1.2 billion annually according to a 2023 study. The Fair Circularity Initiative estimates that these informal recyclers earn between Rs42,500 and Rs43,300 per month.

This monthly income falls short of the Rs60,434 living-wage benchmark calculated using the Anker methodology. The Bagh Ibne Qasim biogas plant processes about two tonnes of organic waste daily to produce a capacity of 150 cubic metres of gas.

Concept Loop recycled over 1,300 tonnes of plastic and produced more than 100,000 square feet of building materials, according to the Sindh Enterprise Incubation Centre. The company also diverted over 7,000 kg of low-value plastic waste during a Mari Petroleum project in Daharki, Sindh.

Pakistan imported virgin plastic resin worth $3 billion in 2022, while the World Economic Forum estimated the circular economy could save over $1 trillion per year in materials globally in 2014. In Mexico, the Monterrey Waste Management and Carbon Offset Project sold more than one million metric tonnes of certified emissions reductions between 2005 and 2017, according to the World Bank.

A proposed carbon finance project received $5.524 million in World Bank funding. Rwanda banned plastic bags in 2008, and Lahore Compost Limited began operating in 2006.

The SWaCH cooperative in Pune integrates over 3,900 waste pickers who divert approximately 80,000 tonnes annually, resulting in estimated municipal transport savings of Rs16 million a year. Punjab introduced a sanitation fee ranging from Rs300 to Rs5,000 per month under the Suthra Punjab programme.
