Plotlines include a fast-progressing romance between Lala and the young Gibbs, a story of a great love that got away, and the development of Gibbs' friendship with Ducky. A moment in the show depicts present-day Gibbs wishing he had reconnected with Ducky.

Emily Wickersham will reprise her role as Ellie Bishop in several episodes beginning 27 October 2026. Harmon appeared in a crossover episode with the original NCIS series.

The series also features a crossover with the original NCIS. Harmon said, "grip it and rip it."
