Chinese brands drop Kylian Mbappé following controversial remarks on dictator meme

Several Chinese brands have severed ties with French footballer Kylian Mbappé following a social media backlash over his comments regarding a "Chinese dictator." Mbappé admitted to using a meme featuring a video of a "Chinese dictator" with his friends, stating, "I use it with my friends all the time."
The football forum Dongqiudi described the remarks as "inappropriate" and noted they "hurt the feelings of Chinese people" on Monday night. CCTV is suspending the broadcast of La Liga matches in response to the controversy.
Mengniu announced a zero-tolerance policy towards any actions that offend the public, stating the company "firmly opposes" such behaviour. Dongpeng also declared that his company "firmly opposes and has a zero-tolerance policy towards any behaviour that offends national sentiments."
Mbappé, who debuted for Real Madrid in August 2024, previously sued a French influencer and kebab shop owner earlier this year.
