Gareth Batty has resigned as the head coach of Surrey to join the Chennai Super Kings as an assistant coach. The departure concludes a 21-year association with the club, where Batty first played between 1998 and 2001.
Returning to The Oval in 2010, Batty served as club captain from 2015 to 2017. During his time with the side, Batty appeared in more than 350 matches and claimed over 500 wickets across all formats.
Batty, who played nine Tests for England before retiring in 2021, oversaw a period where Surrey won the County Championship in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Alec Stewart said, "It is difficult to put into words just how much Gareth Batty has given to Surrey County Cricket Club, both as a player and as head coach."
"Thank you hardly seems enough for all that Surrey has meant to me," Batty said. "The new journey is a very exciting one for my family and I, and I'm looking forward to getting going."
Richard Dawson has joined the England set-up, while Ryan Campbell moved to become the director of cricket for Durham.
