Airbnb is prohibiting hosts from including time-consuming chores in their house rules for reservations booked on or after 20 November 2026. Specific restrictions include banning requests for guests to wash and put away dishes, remove bed sheets, or start laundry loads.
Hosts may still request that guests put used dishes in the sink or gather used towels. Taking garbage off-site is also prohibited, though hosts can ask guests to separate trash and recycling into designated indoor bins.
Airbnb is introducing a new "rules and requests" section on listings to display host requirements and will show an "includes cleaning requests" warning if such chores remain in the description. Hosts are forbidden from adding extra rules via messages to guests or on physical signs around the property.
Exceptions are permitted for asking guests to dispose of trash in animal-proof containers in bear country. Some hosts argue that these restrictions pose health risks, while others claim guests can simply choose not to stay at listings with overly-strict rules.
