Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence could trigger 20 years of economic and social upheaval. The 70-year-old founder stated that the shift toward an AI-driven economy will produce distinct winners and losers.
Gates said, "My big concern is this 20-year transition period, where they'll have winners and losers and a lot of disruption." Advances in humanoid robotics and AI may soon enable machines to perform physical tasks such as surgery, growing food, and constructing homes.
Humanity might choose to keep specific roles like sports, arts, food preparation, and childcare exclusively for people. Despite these risks, Gates highlighted the potential for AI to improve agriculture and healthcare.
He cautioned that society and governments are currently unprepared for the rapid pace of AI development. Stronger government oversight and technical safeguards are needed to protect against biological threats and cyberattacks.
Gates argued that private AI companies cannot be solely responsible for managing these risks. Gates added, "I hate being the bearer of concerning news on this, but it's even worse not to tell people that this is coming. We have choices as humans to make about how we shape it."
