FCC blocks two gadgets over foreign surveillance chips

The Federal Communications Commission blocked two gadgets because they contain foreign surveillance chips. Brendan Carr’s FCC granted itself a new authority on 13 October to prohibit devices containing any computer chip manufactured by companies on its national security threat list.
The specific surveillance chip identified in the hardware is a HiVision Hi3516CV610 UHD Smart Vision SoC. HiVision operates as a subsidiary of Huawei, which remains on the FCC’s Covered List.
New powers also allow the commission to retroactively ban gadgets and block modular radio transmitters.
