Ayesha Haroon represented Pakistan in discussions at the World Summit on Investing in Children’s Well-being in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. More than 600 participants from over 100 countries attended the event, which is scheduled to conclude on 22 October.
International institutions including the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF support the initiative. Khalilur Rahman, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister, also attended the summit.
The Second International Congress on Childhood Cancer is being held alongside the main summit. The World Health Organization stated that around 400,000 children and adolescents develop cancer worldwide each year.
While survival rates for childhood cancer exceed 80 percent in high-income countries, they remain below 30 percent in many low- and middle-income nations. Uzbekistan presented ongoing social reforms to strengthen support for vulnerable families and highlighted efforts to combat child labour and sexual abuse.
Under President Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan has pursued reforms in poverty reduction and social protection. The summit called for greater public investment in children’s health, education, nutrition and social protection, while emphasizing child-friendly budgeting and sustainable financing.
UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed addressed the conference through a video message. Participants called for accelerated collective efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals related to children.
The summit will conclude with the adoption of the Samarkand Declaration on Investing in Children’s Well-being.
