AMD is acquiring World Labs in a deal valued at $8.2 billion. Fei-Fei Li will assume the role of EVP and chief scientist at AMD.

World Labs, which launched in 2024, was previously valued at $1 billion. The acquisition is expected to conclude by the end of the year.

The World Labs team plans to maintain its focus on advancing research into artificial intelligence models. Li stated, "Just like I knew it was time to do a startup to jumpstart the work of creating foundation models beyond LLMs and achieve the most impact in AI, it’s again very clear that the right path for myself and World Labs is to continue our mission as a part of AMD."

Lisa Su, AMD's representative, noted that "Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise." She added that together, they can use this insight to develop the hardware, software, and systems needed to power the next generation of AI and strengthen the open AI ecosystem.

Lisa Su also commented, "Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving."
