DigUp provides a free and open-source application that allows users to search for computer files using natural language descriptions. The software is compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems.
Google DeepMind released the EmbeddingGemma 2 model in October 2026 to power the application's search capabilities. This 740-million-parameter model supports more than 100 languages and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
Privacy is maintained because indexed files never leave the user's computer. Users must connect to the internet once to download the 865MB model, after which the app checks for updates daily.
The application requires no user account and contains no telemetry. Supported file types include common image formats, scanned PDFs, and documents such as TXT, Markdown, RTF, DOCX, ODT, and HTML.
Audio files are processed in overlapping 30-second sections, while videos are indexed using their soundtracks and sampled frames. Developers can use an optional code search feature to locate functions by describing their intended actions.
Search results can open directly at the relevant line in editors like VS Code, Cursor, Zed, Sublime Text, and JetBrains IDEs. Initial indexing may take several hours or just a few minutes depending on the volume of data.
New files typically become searchable within a few seconds of being added.
