DoorDash processed 970 million orders during its second quarter this year, while generating $4.5 billion in revenue. Bites, a platform associated with the service, has secured approximately 300 restaurants within the Bay Area.

DoorDash previously sent an email to Bay Area restaurants in August. The company warned restaurants that they might not have agreed to Bites’ terms, pricing structures, or service standards.

DoorDash fees for restaurants range between 15 and 30 percent per delivery order, and Bites charges a flat $1 surcharge per order. Diners can now place orders from Bites restaurants directly within ChatGPT.

Bala Subramaniam, the founder and CEO of Bites, stated that 14 restaurant partners received a letter from DoorDash. Jayaraman estimates that 65 percent of his orders now come through Bites.

Jayaraman remarked, “We are seeing a huge drop or a huge shift away from DoorDash, which I personally welcome because it’s adding to my bottom line.” Matt Maloney asserted that the pricing structure on larger platforms is outdated.

Maloney added, “All of that investment does not have to be made anymore, and yet the pricing has stayed the same.” The Verge tested ordering a pizza and beverage for delivery via ChatGPT using the Bites plugin, totaling $56.73.

Conversely, the identical order placed through DoorDash amounted to $70.29. Subramaniam stated, “People think it’s the delivery apps that are egregious, [but] it’s actually the model that has made the restaurants actually increase the prices.”

DoorDash does not provide responses to specific queries regarding its pricing structure, the data it shares with restaurants, or how AI might disrupt the app-based takeout model. Lisa Singh noted that some restaurant partners raised concerns about appearing on Bites without their consent.
