Google intends to establish new data centres in Muhos, Finland, as part of a planned €13 billion investment over the next two years. The company's expansion blueprint covers several Finnish locations, including Kajaani, Muhos, Vaala, and Hamina.
Local sentiment appears positive, with Joni Pitkanen stating that the project will bring 'large-scale business activity' and 'life' to the rural municipality. Furthermore, Muhos mayor Kimmo Hinno asserted that the investment would 'completely change the situation for the entire municipality and the Oulu region'.
However, regulatory scrutiny remains high, as the Finnish Supervisory Agency (LVV) investigates whether Tuike Finland cleared over 300 hectares of forest in Muhos without a mandatory environmental impact assessment. Consequently, Hanna Halmeenpaa of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation requested a halt to construction site operations until legal compliance is confirmed.
Meanwhile, a citizen's initiative demanding stricter rules on data centre energy consumption collected more than 50,000 signatures within three days. These developments occur against a backdrop where the Finnish government, led by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's right-wing government, has made attracting data centre investments a key priority.
