The TCL P80 Ultra incorporates a matte OLED display, a feature that TCL first introduced to its phones with the Nxtpaper 40 in 2023. The P80 Ultra's screen supports an always-on display function.
While the display is described as bright and beautiful, offering sufficient colour and contrast for streaming and scrolling, the device's performance reportedly suffers from sluggishness and stuttering. Furthermore, the photo quality on the P80 Ultra is assessed as distinctly average.
The Nxtpaper anti-glare effect proves highly beneficial, making the P80 Ultra excellent for use in brightly lit areas. The display offers different modes, including Paper Mode, which can wash out the screen's colour or render it fully monochromatic on the P80 Ultra.
For a strictly monochrome experience, the P80 Ultra features Max Ink Mode, which restricts access to most operating system functions and applications. Other manufacturers have explored similar matte screen technology; Huawei has released tablets equipped with PaperMatte panels.
Apple has previously offered nano-texture glass on its iPad Pro models since 2024. Apple is reportedly introducing the matte coating to the iPhone Duo for the first time.
