Vienna and Beijing teams created the world's first two operating nuclear clocks on 7 October 2026. The two groups, comprising Vienna and Beijing, successfully developed these novel timekeeping instruments.

Experts suggest that nuclear clocks possess the capability to surpass the performance of existing top conventional atomic clocks.

However, Thorsten Schumm noted that the nuclear clock remains "far from its target performance." According to Schumm, the Vienna team possesses slightly superior thorium crystals, featuring both higher concentration and better optical properties, while the Beijing team has secured a stronger laser.

Demonstrating the clock's utility, the Vienna team conducted a precision physics experiment aiming to detect dark matter. The experiment, however, did not confirm the presence of dark matter.
