Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement to halt strikes on energy infrastructure, effective immediately. Volodymyr Zelensky described the news of the ceasefire as "news for me" while noting that Russia struck multiple energy targets across Ukraine during the night and into Monday morning.
Ukraine expressed a willingness to join the ceasefire provided that Russia also complies with the terms. Moscow proposed a one-day cessation of hostilities on Monday to enable Ukraine to hold elections, though Sergei Lavrov stated that Ukraine does not deserve such a respite.
The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, "Contacts are continuing," and added that the president wants a lasting peace rather than just a ceasefire. Zelensky also requested a 60-day Russian ceasefire to facilitate presidential elections, while Trump suggested it is time for Ukraine to elect a new president.
A fuel deal involving Trump and Vladimir Putin was also noted for the United States to import Russian diesel. The publication Moskovsky Komsomolets described the energy ceasefire announcement as "a gift" for Moscow.
