Pedro Sánchez called for a snap election for 29 November in Spain. Right-wing parties in parliament narrowly rejected measures intended to improve tenant conditions and address soaring rental costs.
The People's Party (PP) and Vox voted against the housing measures proposed by Sánchez's government. In response, Sánchez called for voters to "mobilise and ensure that parliament gives us a much bigger, progressive majority with which to defeat the elites, conquer social rights and keep transforming Spain."
Meanwhile, thousands protested in Spanish cities against the government's handling of migrants arriving in Ceuta. More than 70,000 migrants arrived in Ceuta during July.
About 50 marches calling for greater tenant protections took place across Spain on Saturday, including in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. The Socialist Party (PSOE) has faced corruption cases involving former senior figures Santos Cerdán and José Luis Ábalos.
Begoña Gómez and Sánchez deny allegations concerning influence peddling and the misuse of funds.
