Members of the Makkah Defence Alliance and Iran held a high-level meeting in Tehran to discuss regional security. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated that participants in the Tehran meeting likely reached a conclusion to end the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.
Asif said, "The joint statement from Iran has come at the highest level of the country’s hierarchy. I think we have arrived at some sort of a conclusion that will help close out this war." The war between Saudi Arabia and Yemen began in March 2014.
Pakistan approved the Makkah agreement last week, while Turkiye’s parliament started efforts to ratify the same pact during the same period. Saudi Arabia intercepted drones and missiles on Sunday.
Asif added, "We will defend Saudi Arabia with all of our might and capability." The first article of the Makkah agreement mandates that parties use all necessary means to eliminate threats to sovereignty, territorial integrity, or internationally recognised borders.
Asif noted that wars should not be started for limited political objectives. He explained that groups can operate in this manner once a setup exists in a country lacking a state structure.
Iranian security officials claimed Tehran has drafted detailed plans to strike Gulf undersea cables if the United States and Israel attack again. A US intelligence memo warned this week that Iranian plots against American personnel had reached advanced stages.
The US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3.
