Pope Leo will travel to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from 6 to 17 November. The 71-year-old pontiff is set to cover 31,000 km and deliver 36 speeches during the apostolic journey.

Medical staff removed the lower lobe of the right lung of Pope Leo on 13 October after he was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. The Vatican stated, "The Holy Father’s recovery after the surgery continues, and the latest medical examinations attest to his good health and favorable clinical condition."

Officials from the Vatican added that there are no contraindications preventing the trip based on current clinical status and laboratory tests. Leo spent decades as a missionary in Peru before being promoted to Vatican positions in 2023.

The Pope addressed the faithful in St Peter's Square on Sunday and cancelled a day visit to Assisi. Leo said, "I am looking forward to returning to the continent where I’ve experienced so many moments of my life."

He further remarked, "May this journey be an occasion for us to open our hearts to one another, strengthen our communion as brothers and sisters, and renew our commitment to proclaiming the Gospel with joy."
