Russia and Ukraine agreed to a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky starting 29 October 2026 to facilitate humanitarian aid and civilian evacuations. The White House stated that both nations agreed to temporarily stop all military action in Oleshky to allow for humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway.

David Arakhamia said the humanitarian operation would begin once the ceasefire was in place. The Kremlin welcomed the agreement after Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump discussed the ceasefire details.

Non-military teams from both countries will visit residents and coordinate transport, according to Melania Trump. Oleshky has been occupied by Russian forces since 24 February 2022.

The population of Oleshky fell from 24,000 before the war to between 1,700 and 2,000, with around 50 children remaining. About 90% of Oleshky was flooded following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.

Donald Trump is pressuring Volodymyr Zelenskiy to reach an agreement with Vladimir Putin while Trump has been active in trying to return Ukrainian children seized by Russia. Trump said, "Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine."
