Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb met with Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik and Lieutenant General Hasan Khattak to review disaster preparedness and climate resilience strategies. Climate change and population growth represent the two primary existential challenges facing Pakistan, according to Senator Aurangzeb.

During recent IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, Pakistan highlighted the implications of climate change to international partners. Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, the outgoing Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), briefed the Finance Minister on the country's long-range climate forecasting system.

This forecasting system is capable of providing outlooks up to 12 months in advance. Senator Aurangzeb stressed that these forecasts must be converted into timely decisions and effective early-warning measures.

The NDMA leadership detailed initiatives involving the Next Generation Technologies initiative and the Global Resilience Hub. Mobilising resources for disaster preparedness requires a combination of domestic funds and engagement with international development partners, the Senator noted.

Lieutenant General Hasan Khattak will serve as the incoming Chairman of the NDMA.
