California has officially recognised Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha as state holidays, according to reports. Assembly Bill 2017 (AB 2017) formally establishes this recognition for Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha, effective from 10 September 2026.
Assembly member Matt Haney introduced AB 2017 to California Governor Gavin Newsom in March 2026. The bill, which was authored by Matt Haney and co-sponsored by CAIR-CA, the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs, and the Muslim Impact Council, permits state and school employees to observe Eid using existing personal holiday credit or leave time.
Furthermore, AB 2017 authorises K-12 schools and community colleges to close for Eid observance through locally negotiated agreements. The legislation addresses a long-standing difficulty for the state's more than one million Muslim residents, who frequently face a choice between religious practice and attending work or school.
CAIR-CA stated that the passage of AB 2017 sends a message that California values and protects its Muslim community amid rising hostility. Eidul Fitr marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramazan.
Meanwhile, Eidul Azha occurs during the final month of the Islamic calendar, Zil Hajj.
