Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government's commitment to modernising Pakistan’s agriculture and food sectors ahead of World Food Day on 16 October. The theme for this year's observance is "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow."
Climate change, water scarcity, declining soil fertility, rising production costs and disruptions in food supply chains pose significant challenges to food security, according to Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. To address these issues, the government is integrating scientific research and technological advancements with the practical experience and traditional knowledge of farmers.
The National Agricultural and Food Security Council (NAFSC) was established to promote coordinated national efforts in these areas. Smallholder farmers will receive priority for affordable credit through the government's engagement with private banks.
Infrastructure improvements include strengthening storage facilities and expanding agricultural processing plants. Better utilisation of Pakistan’s agricultural resources, including crops, halal meat and fisheries, could help boost exports and reduce dependence on imports, Sharif stated.
