AMC Kips Bay 15 will shut its doors on 3 January 2027. The Manhattan theatre, situated at 570 Second Avenue, is currently the second-largest multiplex in New York City behind the Empire 25 in Times Square.
AMC took over the site in 2006, though the cinema has been a fixture of the Kips Bay community since 1999. The venue has operated continuously for over 25 years and frequently ranked among the 10 most attended cinemas in the United States during several days this past summer.
NYU Langone Health is purchasing the building to expand its medical facility, leading the current owner to terminate the AMC lease. AMC proposed that NYU Langone Health enlarge the existing low-rise building to accommodate growth while keeping the theatre in place.
The company also offered to reduce the size of the theatre to ensure some part of the cinema remained. Local residents staged a protest in September to prevent the closure of the venue.
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and New York State Assembly Member Keith Powers have both advocated for keeping the theatre open. AMC operates more than 500 theatres across the United States.
The theatre's closure comes after a record-breaking summer box office where films such as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” “The Odyssey,” and “Toy Story 5” earned $4.67 billion domestically.
