James Ellis Deakins has experience as a script supervisor and the pair currently host the Team Deakins podcast. Deakins has a history of shooting digitally and has collaborated with several prominent directors, including Sam Mendes on Jarhead.

His portfolio includes work on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford with Andrew Dominik, as well as Blade Runner 2049. Other notable projects for the cinematographer include 1917 and No Country for Old Men, the latter of which was a collaboration with Joel and Ethan Coen.

Deakins appeared on an episode of Desert Island Discs and once caught mackerel off the Devon coast. Regarding the creative process, Deakins said, "It’s your emotional reaction to things that’s important."

He further described the experience of "Searching for something he doesn’t really understand, fighting something he doesn’t really understand."
