The International Olympic Committee confirmed on Tuesday that seven countries, including India, Germany, and Qatar, are currently in contention to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. India, Germany, Qatar, Hungary, Turkey, South Africa, and South Korea are listed as interested parties engaging in preliminary discussions with the IOC.
The IOC stated that a shortlist of potential hosts will be established in March next year. India is making an effort to secure its first opportunity to host the Olympic Games.
Qatar is campaigning to become the first Muslim-majority nation to host the world's largest multi-sport event, following its staging of the 2022 soccer World Cup. Germany's candidate city for the Olympics is Munich.
South Africa aims to become the first African nation to host the Olympics, having previously organised the 2010 soccer World Cup. South Korea has a history of hosting major events, staging both summer and winter Olympics in Seoul in 1988 and Pyeongchang in 2018.
Los Angeles is confirmed to host the 2028 Summer Games, while Brisbane will host the Olympics four years after Los Angeles. The committee anticipates naming preferred hosts following a dialogue phase in 2028, with a final decision expected by mid-2029.
