Google updated its privacy policy on 16 October to allow the company to show targeted advertisements based on personal data when users employ personalised AI features. Android Authority first identified the policy change.
The tech firm added an exception to its previous commitment regarding the use of Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos for personalised ads. Users who link these specific services to Search tools or AI Mode via the Personal Intelligence feature may encounter ads tailored to that content.
The company explained that Search might process permitted data to personalise content, including advertisements. Advertisers are restricted from accessing information from Drive, Gmail, and Photos, as well as personally identifying details like email addresses or names.
For instance, a search for mountain bikes could result in sports equipment ads appearing on YouTube. Individuals can disconnect apps from the Personal Intelligence features of Search.
Users also have the option to turn off Personalised Recommendations through the Search Services Personalisation settings page.
