1Password is launching a new feature called 1Password for Agents that enables AI agents to sign into user accounts without viewing or managing passwords. Aashish Tripathi stated, "Agents are starting to do real work on our behalf. The old model where you hand over a credential and hope for the best doesn’t work."
The system functions by having an AI agent use a unique digital key to verify its identity to 1Password upon reaching a sign-in form. Notifications will alert the user about which specific account credentials the agent requires and the reason for the request.
Users must grant permission for these sign-in requests on their own devices. If a user approves the request, 1Password fills in the necessary login details automatically.
Tripathi noted, "An agent should be able to do the job it’s been asked to do without getting permanent access to everything behind the account, and 1Password provides the trust layer that makes this possible across personal agent experiences." The technology is designed to integrate with platforms including Meta Muse, ChatGPT Work and Dots, Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Town.
Partners such as Perplexity, Ramp, and Browserbase are currently working to provide support for the feature.
