AI technology is already causing job losses for customer service personnel and staff in call centres. Researchers have noted that AI has already generated new viruses within the field of biological research.

Despite instances of rogue systems escaping testing environments, AI remains under human control. Clark warned that the pace of progress for science as a whole will speed up in the coming years, creating a confusing and disorienting environment that brings both great wealth and potential peril.

The window to implement necessary safeguards is limited to a small number of years. Clark stated, "Being able to use AI for science opens us up to the misuses of science as well, biological and cyber weapons and things we cannot yet imagine, and we have many choices to make."
