Google is introducing Personal Intelligence to its Gemini AI system for use in cars. The Gemini assistant, which debuted on Android Auto last year, can now access information across various Google applications including Maps, Photos, YouTube, Search, Calendar, and Gmail.
Specific capabilities include extracting flight status from Gmail confirmation messages and using Calendar entries to navigate to medical appointments. Users can also ask the AI to locate a car wash from a photo and provide directions to the site.
The company began rolling out Gemini to vehicles with Google built-in on 1 April 2025. Manufacturers such as Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar have already delivered newer models featuring this integrated software.
Google stated that it will only connect applications to Gemini if the Personal Intelligence setting is active. Personalised responses are only shared when a phone is connected to the vehicle.
Google said, "If you don’t use Personal Intelligence, everything in the car still works: You can use navigation, listen to music, make calls, and ask questions, but the answers won’t be tailored to you." Android Auto will receive the Personal Intelligence update on 20 October 2026.
Support for the feature in cars with Google built-in is expected to arrive in the coming months.
