DNEG Animation reconstructed the facial rig, expressions, and fur for the character Red in The Angry Birds Movie 3. The studio could not transfer the proprietary grooming, rigging, and surfacing tools from previous films into its own pipeline.
Harboun stated, "We had to start from this. A plucked chicken version of Red." Harboun added, "In every given situation, Red always needs to be red."
Approximately 75% of the film's shots featured character-effects work completed through a new automated system developed by DNEG. About 25% of the shots were able to move through this automated process during the early stages of production.
Harboun noted, "It’s not machine learning, it’s human learning." The production designer Jeanie Chang chose a saturated tropical palette for the visual style.
Over 20 new characters appear in the movie, including Glider, voiced by Walker Scobell. Emma Myers provides the voice for June, while Psalm West voices Olly.
James Austin Johnson voices Fuzzy in the production. DNEG created a solution for Olly's glasses that the team nicknamed “Pancake Eyes.”
Harboun said, "The goal was to make a spider that even an arachnophobe would love." Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to the Red Rising book series.
Francis Lawrence is set to direct a film based on the first novel in the Red Rising series.
