Common Sense Media stated that ChatGPT for Teens presents an unacceptable risk to minors. The platform introduced ChatGPT for Teens in August.

Furthermore, Media asserted that the teen protections implemented in ChatGPT fall short of the company's own assurances. The organization also claimed that ChatGPT fails to issue necessary alerts to parents when required.

Tom Siegel noted that ChatGPT could give parents a false sense of security regarding guardrails and safety alerts that frequently fail to function. Consequently, Siegel recommended that ChatGPT remain restricted to adults until OpenAI rectifies the alerts and substantiates fixes through independent testing.

Conversely, Eric Porterfield stated that OpenAI maintains a deep commitment to teen safety and developing necessary safeguards. Porterfield added that OpenAI does not believe Media’s testing accurately reflects how ChatGPT’s teen safeguards operate in practice.

Moreover, Porterfield suggested that OpenAI’s testing might have commenced and concluded before the activation of parental controls was fully complete.
