Susan Collins and Troy Jackson are currently competing for the Senate seat in Maine. During a televised debate on Tuesday, Susan Collins distanced herself from Donald Trump while facing Democratic challenger Troy Jackson.
Jackson suggested Collins acted as a Trump loyalist, noting that she voted with the president ninety-six percent of the time. Jackson further linked Collins' 2018 vote supporting Brett Kavanaugh to the subsequent overturning of Roe v Wade by the court.
Conversely, Collins claimed she voted against her own party more often than any other senator. Regarding foreign policy, Collins stated she voted nine times to end the war with Iran.
Collins also asserted that she was the most vocal opponent of the tariffs placed on Canada. When questioned about Donald Trump, Collins stated, “I don’t think that President Trump is going to come to Maine,” and added, “I’ve heard nothing from his office, and I’m not exactly his favorite senator.”
The record shows that the state of Maine has voted against Trump on three occasions. Collins has held the position of senator since 1996.
