The International Criminal Court (ICC) unsealed arrest warrants for Habibullah Agha and Neda Mohammad Nadeem on 9 September 2025. The warrants accuse Agha and Nadeem of crimes against humanity related to denying education rights to women and girls over the age of twelve.
The ICC Pre-Trial Chamber II decided to unseal the warrants to prevent any further criminal acts. Furthermore, the court also issued warrants for Haibatullah Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani.
These suspects face accusations concerning 'the crime against humanity of persecution on gender grounds,' according to the court. The alleged criminal activities took place in Afghanistan, spanning from the Taliban's seizure of power up to at least 20 January 2025.
In related developments, the UN Human Rights Council unanimously criticized the discrimination faced by women and girls in Afghanistan from its 47 member countries. The UN Human Rights Council also urged the Taliban authorities to repeal the oppression targeting women and girls within Afghanistan.
