Australia confirms first H5N1 bird flu case on Macquarie Island

Beth Cookson stated that these samples marked the first H5 event recorded on the island. The nation became the final continent to report bird flu cases in June.
In late 2025, the H5 virus was detected on Heard Island, where it killed more than 13,000 baby seals. Southern elephant seals, which can reach weights of 3,600 kg, have experienced pup mortality rates exceeding 90 percent in some instances.
Australia's environment department announced it would remove personnel from a research station on Macquarie Island in August. The department cited the "psycho-social risk to expeditioners of a potential H5 avian influenza outbreak" as a reason for the move.
Officials believe the virus could likely cause a significant mortality event for elephant seals during the next breeding season.
