A truce has commenced in Oleshky, a Ukrainian city currently under Russian occupation. Russia's defence ministry stated that it ceased firing toward the city of Kherson at 04:00 Moscow time.
Dmytro Lubinets, the head of the Ukrainian negotiating team, confirmed the ceasefire had begun. Lubinets said, "As head of the Ukrainian negotiating team, I confirm that the Ukrainian side is honouring its commitments."
The ceasefire is intended to allow for the delivery of aid and the evacuation of civilians. The White House reported that Melania Trump secured the ceasefire in Oleshky last week.
Trump announced the truce one week prior to the start of the ceasefire. Oleshky is situated on the south bank of the river Dnipro.
Russia seized the city during the first days of its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Before the war, the city was home to 24,000 people.
Trump penned a letter to Putin in August 2025. Trump stated, "Non-military, civilian leaders from both countries will work together to visit Oleshky residents in their homes and determine the level of assistance they require."
She also noted it was "time to protect children and future generations worldwide."
