Lahore High Court to hear petition to limit Punjab Basant celebrations

Justice Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry will hear a petition seeking to restrict Punjab's Basant celebrations to a single day in 2027. Citizen Shahid Islam filed the legal challenge against the provincial government and senior officials.
The Punjab government is scheduled to be represented by Additional Advocate General Khawaja Mohsin Abbas. Authorities previously announced that the festivities would run from 29 January to 7 February 2027.
Islam argues that a 10-day period of kite-flying festivities poses significant safety hazards to local residents. The petitioner also contends that extended celebrations exacerbate environmental pollution and noise levels.
Fatalities during the 2026 Basant celebrations reached 17 people.
