Fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright causes fatalities and injuries

A serious incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in western Alberta province sparked a major fire that resulted in fatalities and injuries. The blaze spread rapidly because of high winds and crossed the base fence into the nearby district.
Located about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, the base housed 1,310 military and civilian personnel as of 2021. The Canadian military and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the incident, while General Jennie Carignan said, "Our priority remains the welfare of our members, their families and their community."
The fire was being held as of late Saturday, and the advance voting station in the town of Wainwright, which has a population of about 6,600, closed. McGuinty added that more information would be shared in the coming hours and days.
