Pakistan Federal cabinet recommends emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province
The Pakistan Federal cabinet recommended imposing an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the federal cabinet to discuss the recommendation, which falls under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.
The Prime Minister’s Office has submitted formal advice to the Presidency concerning the implementation of emergency rules. Authorities cited a worsening law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a primary reason for the move.
The federal government also noted that the provincial administration is allegedly disengaged from counter-terrorism efforts. Sharif stated, "I will not allow them (PTI) to destabilise the economy."
Pakistan recently reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund. Last month, Sharif met IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva at the United Nations General Assembly.
The Prime Minister also visited London last month to consult with senior executives of global financial institutions.
Shehbaz Sharif said, "I will not allow them (PTI) to destabilise the economy."
