The Punjab government has extended the detention of Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan, and Noreen Niazi for an additional 30 days. Aleema Khan was first taken into custody in Lahore on 20 September under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order, 1960.
Authorities subsequently moved Khan to Kot Lakhpat jail. Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan were also detained under the same 3-MPO provision on 21 September.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party had scheduled a nationwide protest and a long march to Islamabad on 27 September. Shahrez Khan filed a petition in the Lahore High Court on 20 October to contest the detention of the three sisters.
Counsel for the petitioner argued that the detention orders for all three women expired on 19 and 20 October. A government lawyer presented a report from the Punjab home secretary to the Lahore High Court.
The deputy commissioner submitted a proposal to the Punjab government recommending a further extension of the detention. The Lahore High Court summoned the superintendent of Kot Lakhpat jail and the Punjab home secretary on 28 October.
