Pakistan will formally request a new Generalised System of Preferences (GSP+) arrangement from the European Union following January 2027. The current GSP+ regulation is scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2027.

Existing beneficiaries will remain under the current framework during a grace period running from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2028. The present GSP+ framework is set to expire in December 2026.

Senator Ishaq Dar, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, met with Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on 21 September. Dar highlighted the importance of the GSP+ trade preference scheme for the economic links between Pakistan and the European Union.

The minister emphasised that the GSP+ status is central to Pakistan's trade relations with the bloc. Dar expressed appreciation for the European Union's recognition of Pakistan's work toward dialogue and de-escalation during recent regional events.

He also called for a return to diplomacy and dialogue across the region. EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis held a meeting with the leadership of the Pakistan Textile Council in Karachi.
