Pakistan Opposes New Permanent UNSC Members, Favours More Elected Seats
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad addressed a United Nations Security Council session on Monday, stating that Pakistan opposes adding any new permanent members to the Council. Instead, the representative asserted that Pakistan advocates for a reformed Council structure that includes a greater number of elected members.
During its tenure, Pakistan held its eighth term on the Security Council, covering the 2025-26 period. The nation also played a significant role in mediating discussions between the United States and Iran.
Furthermore, Pakistan supported the Comprehensive Plan on Gaza and endorsed Security Council Resolution 2803 concerning Palestine. The country utilised Arria Formula meetings to draw international focus toward the dispute in Jammu and Kashmir.
In addition to these diplomatic efforts, an Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was signed in June.
